The biggest event on the Whitewater Calendar every year is Galway fest which takes place on the first weekend in March each year. Kayakers from all over the country and abroad descend on the city of Galway for a weekend of Whitewater, Freestyle and of course, mad craic.
The two big events of the weekend are the Whitewater race which takes place on the Bouluisce river near Spiddal pier and a Freestyle which takes place in Tuam hole just outside the fastest place in Ireland, Tuam (Say it really fast).
Every year UCC sends up a strong contingent of paddlers and have had great success over the years winning numerous awards! The only stipulation to take part in this event is that you must be registered with Canoeing Ireland and have level three standard skills! If you haven’t done your level Three by the time of the festival, an instructors can vouch for you if they feel you are up to the level of the river.
If you haven’t already seen it here is the video from last years event, where mighty fun was had by all. Special congratulations to our own Colin Murphy who took second place in the men’s sport category
